Networking, Connections, and Embracing Qualities
BY AUDREY WONG
Even with education and experience, many individuals struggle for jobs in today's market. The challenge of searching and being faced with rejection multiple times often discourages those on this path. This is where the idea of networking and making connections with those in the industry is critical to increase your chances of growth. By embracing who you are as a whole, you will learn that both your personal and professional qualities are important to your success.
The biggest barrier many women face is the gender pay gap. This gap affects countless women in a variety of industries and positions, and even increases the more leadership a role involves. With women earning less than men in similar roles, many feel demotivated and unrecognized. Moreover, women may struggle to even enter their chosen career path in the face of gender biases. Employers tend to view women as more “sensitive” or “emotional,” believing that these qualities will stop them from doing their jobs effectively. However, these qualities are important to embrace for empathy towards fellow employers, connections, and customers. Instead of taking negative comments to heart, you can embrace your compassion for others and use them to connect on a personal level for networking. This empathy can take connection beyond one that is purely professional, making conversations more meaningful and memorable.
A lot of women also struggle due to the lack of female role models in higher positions, especially in male-dominated industries such as construction or technology. Thus, role models are critical to building their confidence. Even if women don’t have others to look up to in their own company, connecting with women in different industries can be helpful. Aside from hard skills, soft skills such as strong communication, resilience, and self-determination can be learned. The first step in working towards success is having the confidence in yourself to achieve goals; thus, networking and making connections is crucial.
Lastly, making connections helps you work towards professional growth. When looking for new opportunities, it is important to go past just yourself and your resume. Opportunities like networking events, social functions, and other gatherings can help you make industry connections. Whether it be a formal conference or an informal coffee chat, having a conversation and learning about other people's work can help you form important bonds. Especially with a face-to-face conversation, you go beyond your credentials and show who you are as a person. Networking helps to showcase your personal and professional success for others to take note of.
By embracing your own qualities to make connections, you can expand your network past those you already know. It is an opportunity to find role models, inspire growth, and showcase what you have to offer.
