“Secret” Disabled Educators In The U.S.
BY GEORGINA ATTA, GRADE 5
Did you know that many educators are disabled? Roughly 210,000 educators in the United States have some kind of disability, and “will have to face some obstacles” before acquiring their licenses to be legal educators in the U.S.
Taking Action
Many students have not taken this seriously, causing disabled teachers to be bullied or made fun of. People such as Patty Berne, Mia Mingus, and Stacey Milbern are protesting for disabled equal rights!
Famous Disabled Educators
Helen Keller was an author, disability rights advocate, and political activist who became blind and deaf at nineteen months old. However, she persevered and authored numerous books helping other disabled children in the world. Louis Braille was a blind French educator and inventor of a reading and writing system for the visually impaired. His system remains virtually unchanged to this day, and is known worldwide as “braille.”
Now that you know about disabled educators in the U.S., would you take action?
This article was written during the GWS Summer Writing Workshop. Taught by the GWS Publication Team, the workshop hosted young journalists in grades 1 through 12, each with a passion for writing and learning. Over five weeks throughout the summer, students brainstormed, researched, outlined, drafted, revised, and ultimately produced an article about a topic related to women in business.
