GWS Summer Writing Workshop Recap

BY ELLIS CHUNG

With over 50 sign-ups from around the world, the first ever Girls Who Start Summer Writing Workshop was a huge success! Taught by the GWS Publication Team, the workshop hosted young journalists in grades 1 through 12, each with a passion for writing and learning. Over five weeks throughout the summer, students brainstormed, researched, outlined, drafted, revised, and ultimately produced an article about a topic related to women in business.

Article topics ranged from South Asian female executives to the benefits of friendship in business, with many promoting specific female entrepreneurs and businesses. In addition to group discussion, partner work, and writing exercises, the workshop featured two guest speakers. David Lopilato, a journalism teacher at Bethesda Chevy Chase High School, and Lesley Younge, an author and teacher at Maret School, shared their insights on writing, publishing, and amplifying youth voices.

At the end of the five weeks, three young writers were selected as winners of the workshop for their distinctive and inspiring articles: Ariana Tavakkoli (grade 6), Suomo Quarshie (grade 8), and Sari Brownlee (grade 9). In addition to spots in the GWS Publication, their articles will be featured on the front of the Girls Who Start website!
